installation day – walk through the installation process and favorite parts

Our installation day was finally here! The bright orange Vivint car pulled up to our house and our area supervisor, Alfredo (also dressed in orange), arrived to begin. I had no idea what to expect but was so excited to dive in. Before our install, I hardly knew what the features meant let alone where they should go in our house. Fortunately, Alfredo knew what to do to get started. We walked around the house and he quickly made recommendations. I was a bit overwhelmed, but he explained everything simply and answered any questions I had. We talked about specific safety concerns in the house (most of which hadn’t even crossed my mind…) and the best places he recommended that we install individual features like motion detectors and door sensors. Suddenly, I began to see our home in a new light!

To get started, I had some decisions to make. First, we began with the touchscreen panels and I needed to decide where exactly to put them. Alfredo recommended putting the main panel near where we normally enter the house and a secondary panel in our bedroom. One thing to keep in mind is the panel needs to be above or near an outlet. But guess what? The panel is actually wireless! They run the cord through the wall and I love how clean and minimal it looks. Thankfully both Alfredo and Long (the area technician) were both patient with me as I took time to decide. We installed the main touchscreen panel near our front door and the second panel in our bedroom, as they recommended. Our house was starting to look pretty high tech! Long also began installing a smart thermostat to replace our old one.

Then I needed to decide where to install the electronic door lock. Once installed, an electronic door lock allows an exterior door to be unlocked and locked simply by punching in a pass code! It was an easy choice to put this on the door we use most frequently to enter and exit the house. Next up were door sensors. Alfredo recommended installing door sensors on all exterior doors so we installed three in total: one on the front door, one on the side door, and one on the door of our detached garage. I’m really glad he suggested installing one on the garage because it definitely feels less secure being a detached garage.

Next, we needed to decide the location for our motion detector and lighting or small appliance control. The location for the main motion detector was an easy choice; we installed it in the living room, as it is a room central to the house that an intruder would likely pass through, no matter where they entered. I couldn’t believe how well it blended in! We opted to put our lighting control in the living room as well, since the light would be visible from outside the front of the house. Long also gave us our pack of energy efficient light bulbs to use throughout the house.

At this point, we began to discuss the basement. Since there are exposed windows looking into the basement on every side of the house, we felt it was a concern. Alfredo explained that while we could install individual window sensors on the majority of windows in the basement, a motion detector made more sense economically. While one motion detector was included, I’m glad he suggested adding another one in the basement as it would catch any movement on that level.

At this point, we were almost done! Alfredo plugged in our new video camera to start getting it calibrated. We then sat down with Long to discuss what had been done, take care of our remaining balance, and he also answered any questions that we had. He gave us an owner’s manual for our panel in addition to our key fob, which allows us to arm and disarm the system on the way in or out of the house. To finish, we went to our computer with Alfredo and he walked us through setting up our Vivint online account. It was an easy process and now we could now access our home automation system from anywhere! Not only that, but we downloaded the Vivint app to access our system remotely on our phones, too!  We were impressed that we could even see the live video feed from our computer or the app.

In total, our installation took about two hours. It was both professional and thorough, and we were grateful that Alfredo and Long made the process painless! Now it was time to get the hang of using our new home automation system
